Bonus to the workbook

Writing blurb.jpg

In step 2 of my workbook ‘From improv player to improv teacher’ you make your own workshop blurb. Super easy, with a fill-in-the-blank exercise. But of course… Now all the blurbs of all your workshops will start looking the same.

So here are a few fun little extras you can add to your blurb.

  • What is a quote that is relevant for this workshop (from a celebrity, from a student, from yourself)?

  • What is an image that summarizes the topic of your workshop? For example: can their problem be compared to an object? Can the outcome be compared to a location?

  • What is the history of this topic? How did this workshop come about?

  • What is this workshop not

I want to give you a bonus exercise. Think of this as step 2b in the workbook

Bonus exercise 2b

Rewrite your blurb 5 times. Yes, FIVE

As you probably noticed in Step 3 of the workbook, it really helps to get in those numbers!

How? Does not matter. As long as you first let go of what you wrote before, and completely change it up.

For instance by:

  • Changing the word order, the tense (present, past), the punctuation.

  • Writing it in a different language

  • Limiting it to 3 lines. Expanding it to 10 lines.

  • Changing the style: write it in slang, formal, confrontational, or poetic language

  • Telling a friend about your workshop plan, then asking them to write down what they understood.

Now compare all the blurbs you have (your 1 from the workbook, plus 5). Highlight the parts you like. Look at all the highlighted parts and write your final blurb. (Well, final for now)

How does that look? I hope: more personal, more like you and definitely more original.

Congratulations!

Feel free to send it to me. It does not have to be perfect yet. As promised in the workbook, you will get 2 compliments and 2 tips from me. And who doesn’t like compliments? :)
