Great improv resources from Black creators
(and some other BIPOC creators)
Videos
This is one of many delightful videos about improv. Shannon is a terrific improv performer and it really shows in her videos. If you want to explain improv to someone, just send one of her videos!
This sketch show is hilarious: A Black Lady Sketch Show. This type of comedy is so different and so familiar at the same time. Here is a link to one of their sketches on YouTube.
Improv trio Broke Gravy has 23 full length improv shows on their channel. And the quality of both the video and their improv is very inspiring. The concept of their format ‘Watchu wanna know’ is as simple as it is brilliant.
Podcasts
A super insightful and fun conversation about improv and about being black. The While Black podcast invited Kirsten and Chris from improv troupe ‘Dark Side of the Room’. The chemistry between all of them will pour out of your speakers.
I can hear Alsa Bruno talk about any topic any time, but this podcast episode of the Pondercast by Joana Ponder, where he talks about Storytelling is especially relevant for improvisers. And such a joy.
Workshops
Lately John Gebretatose and fellow Blackout players have been teaching the workshop ‘Performing with a Purpose’ and ‘Hard Topics’. Really great content for improvisers, that easily translates to the online space. Their teaching style is honest and very motivating. Book this workshop on June 23 or invite them for your own group.
Monica Gaga is a warm hearted and very funny improv teacher and performer. She is hosting improv taster courses on Mondays and Saturdays. If you, or a loved one, want to try out improv, join this online class for just £10
Music
I love the music from Amsterdam-based artist Nana Adjoa for silent improv scenes and mellow Sundays.
Hiphop duo Run The Jewels just released their album RTJ4 at a time where their passionate music and hard-hitting lyrics have never been more relevant. (Thank you Emil for the tip!)
Films & series
Though not from a black creator, the Netflix show The Get Down has a primarily black cast. I have devoured the one season. A series about the rise of hiphop and disco music through the eyes of teenagers. Watch it for the authentic acting, visual storytelling and kick-ass music.
I will also continuously update the list. A few lovely friends have already pointed me towards other Black creators whose work I cannot wait to discover. It will help me, and hopefully some of you, to make our improv life less white-centered.
P.S. If you are white, and you have questions about the issues raised in the Black Lives Matter movement… Here is a great list. Pick 1 thing in your favourite medium (book, films, Instagram accounts, etc.) and start learning. Let's get to work!
